Organisation Information

Women's Institute (duns Tew)

The Womans Institute.

The Women’s Institute is an educational, social, non-party-political and non-sectarian organisation which is open to women of all ages.
You can be assured of a very warm welcome at the monthly meetings of your local group, Duns Tew which meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the Village Hall.

Should you decide to join us, you will become part of the largest women’s organisation in Britain with approximately 230,000 members in 7,300 individual WIs. (For further information see the NFWI website on www.thewi.org.uk). The Oxfordshire Federation (OFWI) has well over 4,000 members with 146 groups throughout the county.Their website is www.oxfordshirefwi.freeuk.com.

You are invited to attend your local meetings and also to participate in a large and diverse range of activities run by OFWI including sport and leisure pursuits, visits to interesting places, lectures, demonstrations and workshops on a variety of topics

The National Federation of WIs runs its own adult education college, Denman College, near Abingdon, which offers a huge range of day and residential courses aimed at every taste. In particular the new state-of-the-art Cookery Centre is hugely popular with members and non-members alike.

The WI is a respected organisation with the lobbying power to influence governments and works hard to address current issues which concern women, their future and the communities in which they live. Each year, resolutions are put forward by members. These are short-listed, debated, voted upon and, if passed, they become a mandate. Current national campaigns include, Climate Change and Ending Violence Against Women, and last year’s resolution was concerned with Saving the Honey Bee.

Look out in the Bartons Bulletin for monthly details of our meetings – come along and see if you like us! We currently have members from Little Tew, Ledwell and Middle Barton as well as Duns Tew. If you have any queries, call the President, Ann Sharman who lives in Middle Barton – 01869 340626 – or email anny.sharman@btopenworld.com
