Cold Callers - notice from Thames Valley Police

19th November 2025

We would like to inform you of a recent increase in cold callers approaching homes in CHIPPING NORTON, requesting money or donations. While some may be legitimate, others may not be, and we encourage everyone to remain vigilant.

Be cautious at the door:

  • Don't open the door to strangers unless you are absolutely sure of their identity
  • Use a door chain or spyhole to speak with callers without fully opening your door
  • Ask for ID - genuine callers will always carry identification. Take your time to inspect it carefully

Verify before you trust:

  • Don't be pressured into making decisions or purchases on the spot
  • Never give out personal or financial information to someone you don't know or trust
  • Call the company directly using a verified number if you're unsure about the caller's legitimacy

Say NO politely but firmly:

  • It's okay to refuse entry or end a conversation ifnypu feel uncomfortable
  • Display a ‘NO COLD CALLERS’ sign on you door or window - it can deter unwanted visitors

Look out for vulnerable neighbours:

  • Check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may be more susceptible to scams
  • Report any suspicious activity to the police immediately

Report it:

  • If you feel threatened or suspect a scam, call 999 in an emergency
  • For non-emergencies, contact 101 or Report online via the police website
